Hormigas culonas “big ass ants” a typical Colombian snack
The culonas ants are a delicious and healthy gift.
This variety of ant is dark yellow, has thick head, small thorax and abdomen ans unusually bulky rump compared to the rest of their body. Provided with large tongs and four colorful wings; the “hormiga culona” is a native and typical snack in the Colombian region of Santander.
The ants are thought to have aphrodisiacal properties and are given as a wedding gift.
They are sometimes sold in Colombian cinemas as popcorn substitute.
PREPARATION
Remove the head, legs and wings, and place the ants on a roast into thin layers. Â To prevent them from burning, they are sprayed with salt water.
