Yes,  even Colombia has hot dogs!
They call it “perro caliente”, which is actually the spanish translation for “hot dog”.

So, whats so special about the Colombian Hot Dog?

Well, since Colombians have a different taste than Americans,
their version of the hot dog is different.

The Colombian Hot dog has following ingredients:

Of course the main ingredients are:

- hot dogs buns

- pork or beef hot dogs

- Mayonnaise

- Ketchup

- Mustard

  • Now here are the special Colombian ingredients:
    • Pineapple Sauce (About 1 Cup)
    • 2 cups fresh pineapple, peeled and cut into chunks
    • 1/3 cup water
    • 2 ½ tablespoons sugar or taste
    • 1 ¼ teaspoon cornstarch
    • Juice of ½ a lime
1 small bag potato chips, crushed into fine piecesIn Colombia  “salsa rosada” is very popular. Salsa rosada is a 50-50 mixture of ketchup and Mayonnaise.Because of the pineapple sauce the Colombian Hot dog tastes sweet and the mixture of pineapple chunks with crushed potato chips, mustard, ketchup AND mayonnaise might taste very strange for you.
Anyway, when in Colombian you should try it maybe you will love it!

These Perros Calientes can be bought in Colombia in every corner, for foreign visitors we would not recommend buying them from street vendors,  but in one of the many shopping malls in Colombia.

Enjoy the Colombian Perro Caliente in Colombia or try the recipe at home!
